A plan of strategy should contain actions for long-term prevention of burn-out in the company.

Prevention at different levels

Actions for prevention should be carried out at different levels; company, departments and employees. There should also be actions for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Primary prevention tries to prevent burn-out from happening in the first place. The term secondary prevention stands for actions to prevent burn-out from breaking out among employees that already have the first symptoms of burn-out. While primary prevention addresses everyone in the company, secondary prevention applies to exposed individuals. Tertiary prevention is used for actions directed at those who already are suffering from burn-out both to end it and to prevent the employees from being burned out again. The actions usually have effect on several levels; it can therefore in practice be difficult separating the three levels.

Support and understanding

The actions in its self are of little use if the company’s employees and leaders do not understand why they are carried out. The company’s ability to inform and implement is important to receive support and understand among the employees. The management has a key role here! Be aware that the management (and employees) might need time before they are ready to dedicate the time and resources that are required for carry out the actions.

Involvement of employees

For best possible plan of strategy and implementation, the employees should be involved during the planning, development and implementation of both the plan and the actions for prevention of burn-out.
