Burn-out is a physical and mental state you turn into by exploiting your body ruthlessly

until all resources and energy more or less is consumed,

and the body can not recover without prolonged restitution and other necessary actions.

The graph to the left, gives a simplified illustration of ruthless exploitation until the state of burn-out. The green, whole line shows the amount of accessible resources and energy. The red, dashed line shows the amount of consumed resources and energy. Due to the gap between accessible and consumed resources/energy, the amount of accessible resources and energy will gradually decline. If this last long enough time, the resources and energy will reduce so much that the person becomes burned out.

The gap between accessible and consumed resources/energy is caused by the person or the environment. Usually it is a combination of these internal and external factors that results in burn-out. The exact factors differ from person to person, but usually the main cause of burn-out is work.

The time it takes to get burned out

The time it takes to empty the resources and energy so much that you get burned out depends on:

  • how much resources and energy you have in the first place
  • how big the gap is between the resources/energy you possess and use
As the graph to the right shows, the quickest way to burn-out is with a big gap. A small gap will also result in burn-out if it lasts long enough without time for recuperation.
