The purpose with meditation is to calm down body and mind. There are several meditation techniques:
  • focus on breathing
  • focus on an object
  • visualization

When and for how long?

Regularly meditation gives the best result – preferable meditate every day. You choose yourself the point in time during the day. But the best time is in the morning – the energy is more fresh and stronger then. The traditionally time for meditation and qigong, is at sunrise.

There is no rule for how long you should meditate at a time. In the beginning five minutes can be enough. It is better to start with a short, manageable period, than to fail with a longer one.

Noisy thoughts

In the beginning you might notice that your mind is wandering and you're having a hard time focusing. This is ok, it's a sign that the meditation works - as you have come in contact with the internal “bothering” you usually does not notice during the busy day. When this happens; stop and refocus. After a while the thoughts and feelings will calm down. How long time it will take before they calm down, differ from person to person.

How to learn meditation

It is possible to learn meditation by yourself, but the best is to have a teacher.

The effect

Meditation is an effective way to reduce physical and mental stress:
  • calms down the thoughts
  • diminishes the level of tension in the body
  • slows down the heart rate
  • calms down the breathing

Many people with high blood pressure, get good result from meditation.

Advice

If you have any mental problems, you ought to consult the doctor before you start to meditate. Some experience anxiety and worry (without reason) the first times they meditate. Usually this settles after a while.
